About Woodsmiths
The StudioAt Woodsmiths Studio we transform the finest of woods into functional art.  Our creations reveal the beauty of wood, yet are practical and affordable for everyday use.

Founded in 1997 by artisan Robert J. Evans, Woodsmiths` creations can be found in homes throughout North America and several countries around the world.

Woodsmiths` creations are made using hardwoods from the renowned highlands of Cape Breton Island, Canada.  This includes yellow birch, beech, oak, ash, maple, Birdseye maple, spalted woods and the occasional cherry, apple, walnut, and more.

Hardwoods are collected in an environmentally responsible manner and dried on-site.  Drying is accomplished using a large drying shed and solar kiln.  The woods are then stored, often for 2 to 3 years, prior to use.  This provides Woodsmiths with a large on-hand inventory that enables the selection of the ideal piece of wood for the task, in terms of quality and moisture content.

In order to minimize waste, Woodsmiths uses an integrated design approach that enables off-cuts from one product to be used in the creation of another.  Throughout each stage of the woodworking process, attention is paid to all details – large and small – and each item is smoothed, hand-sanded, coated with non-toxic finishes, and polished to a jewel-like sheen.

Woodsmiths` creations are the ideal gift, showpiece, or centerpiece for any home.

Artisan and Owner, Robert J. Evans

Robert EvansThe son of James Stanley Evans – a master cabinetmaker – Robert began his training at a very young age.  By his mid-thirties he had gained considerable experience in construction, interior finish, cabinetmaking, and furniture manufacturing and design. In 1983 he was appointed an instructor of technical education, a position that he occupied for some 17 years. Many of the unique products created at Woodsmiths were designed, tested, enhanced, and refined during this period of learning, skill development, and experimentation.

Bob`s many years of woodworking and technical experience have enabled him to hone his craft so well that he now has the freedom to focus on the creative aspects of woodworking, designing creations that are unique both in style and function.
In 1997, with help from many friends and associates, Bob opened Woodsmiths to bring his creations to the world.  Situated on the renowned Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, Canada, Woodsmiths Studio is where you can find Bob and his team crafting their unique creations daily on-site.  Thousands of people visit the studio each year to browse, explore, and adopt Woodsmiths` creations.
